The eldest of three children, Les never really had a great deal of interest in painting until 1970 when he was given a small set of oils as a present. His first painting, a small winter landscape sold thirty minutes after being displayed in a local art supplies shop.

Completely self-taught, he drew on the visual experience of studying the Old Masters and Impressionists, realizing that in this direction lay a deep well of knowledge and information which would enable him to eventually be able to paint any subject or style.

He has been commissioned by architects in Holland to paint copies of Dutch and Italian Old Masters which are now installed in a restored canal house in the centre of Amsterdam and his painting of Vermeer`s The girl with the pearl earring sold from an antiques gallery in The Hague, close to where the original hangs.

His paintings have been exhibited in London, Liverpool, Canada, The Hague and Darlington.
